WITH TATTOOS, bulging muscles and tracks with titles such as 'Scarface', you'd be forgiven for assuming that Young Spray is your typical 'street' rapper. Appearances are deceptive. Spray, real name Leon Riviere,26, is an integral part of the North Star camp has been creating heat with the mix CDs, Realer than Most Volume 1 and 'Still Realer than Most Volume 2, the former being described as the best underground mix tape of 2007. He has been credited with sparking off the UK's 'gangster rap' scene but as I got to discover, behind the mask is a young man spitting bars from his heart and representing the pain of a whole generation.
'A lot of people claim to be 'real' but to me, they're fake. They've got the whole meaning of being 'real' messed up. They try to live a certain lifestyle that they perceive as a cool, when it's not them,' he says. 'This message is also aimed towards other artists because what some of them rap about is just a media package''They don't realize that they will be judged for that. They've got the attention of kids by glamorizing violence, but they don't even live like that. Being real to me is just being true to yourself and expressing that, not worrying about what other people think, putting food on your child's plate every day. How can you say that you're real when you don't provide for your family?
