THEY say that virtually everybody above a certain age remembers where they were when the news of President Kennedy's assassination came through. I certainly do.

I remember it because I made a connection in my four-year-old mind between the smiling man in the back of the open-topped car that I had seen, as I sat on my father's shoulders, on Drumcondra Road some months previously. Just as my father remembered, at precisely the same age, seeing Michael Collins only weeks before he was killed at Beal na Blath.
