Summary
WHAT is the most pressing political, economic or social issue facing this country today? Is it the prospect of recession? Or rising violence in our streets? Or the sacrifice of our brave young soldiers in Afghanistan? Or could it be family breakdown? A strong case might be made for any of these things. But I would suggest there is one issue about which nearly all of us care very much indeed, and yet it is hardly mentioned in high political discourse. I am speaking of rubbish collection, which, under this Government, has turned us into harried, persecuted and frightened citizens.
There was a time, not at all that long ago, when you put out your rubbish and it was collected by the council. It was called a service. We paid our council tax, and one of the services we got in return was a weekly rubbish collection. Most of us did not feel we were receiving any great favour.
