University Traffic Chaos Continues ; Letters & Opinion

Summary

WITH regards to the article in the DET on August 17 about tackling parking problems in and around the University of Derby: Have the elected representatives on Derby City Council got their heads so far in the sand that they cannot see anything other than the sun shinning in Australia? It does not matter what parking facilities are provided for the university, the students will still park on the side roads, because provided the cars are taxed, insured, and are not obstructing dropped kerbs or parked in restricted areas they are not breaking the law. If the university really wanted to help alleviate the situation they would have, could have and still could build a multi-storey car park on their Kedleston Road campus..

When the late Mrs Emily Mundy bequeathed Markeaton Park to the people of the then Derby borough it was so that it should be used for free outdoor and leisure activities. I may be wrong on this but I'm sure that Mr Charles Clarke-Maxwell, descendant and keeper of Mrs Mundy's will, will correct me. When the city council introduced car parking charges on Markeaton Park (that includes the Mundy Play area) it was on the proviso that all monies raised was put back into Markeaton Park and in spite of numerous requests no-one has been able to furnish me with the figures. In fact, one of the projects that the money was to be used for was to completely resurface the main car park and that as not happened yet.
