Summary


THERE is a wellknown area of moorland in the Peak District called Burbage. But few people know that in World War II Burbage Moor was used as an Army firing range.

Every week or so, soldiers would arrive in trucks and fire mortars and Bren guns (somewhat indiscriminately). By the end of the war, the rocks had been blasted so much, they were white rather than millstone grit grey.
