THE Government is being warned that Britain's water industry is in danger of a longterm, railways-style decline just as senior ministers are deadlocked about how to avoid a massive 30% average increase in household water bills.

At issue is the forthcoming price review for the country's 23 water companies, which are demanding price rises to pay for capital expenditure plans costing up to Pounds 20 billion. However, a political row is brewing as the bill rises are set to hit householders' wallets next year just before the general election.
