    1954 THE GAMES BEGIN: The first organised event for disabled athletes took place at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, in Buckinghamshire, on the day the 1948 Summer Olympics opened in London. Established by neurologist Dr Ludwig Guttmann, inset, the games were designed for British World War Two veteran patients with spinal cord injuries and are widely seen as precursors to the Paralympics which began in Rome in 1960. The 1954 Games, pictured, were the third time they'd been held.
