PREUMINARY
NOTICE
1978 AUTUMN SCHOOL OF STUDIES
ON ALCOHOL
AND
DRUGS
The
next annual school of studies on alcohol
and
drugs will
be
held at St
Vincent's Hospital, Victoria Parade, Fitzroy, Victoria 3065, over the three days
10-12 May 1978.
It is anticipated
that
two
major topics will
be
discussed,
by
use of seminars
and
workshops, on
two
of the days,
with
athird
day
being
an
open
day
for
scientific papers dealing with various aspects of alcohol
and
other drugs.
The
two
major topics deal with:
(i) alcohol
and
drug
use amongst
young
people
and
(ii) the "Disease
Concept"
of alcohol abuse.
There
have
been
numerous surveys, in several States, carried
out
since 1972,
detailing
drug
use amongst school children
and
other young
people,
and
it is
hoped
that this
data
will
be
used at the
May
conference, so as to precipitate
action, or reinforce action already
under
way,
along preventive lines.
It is believed
that
discussion on the Disease
Concept
will
be
broad
enough to
help define attitudes towards alcohol use amongst young people, in a
way
that
will emphasise the
need
to "extend" the Disease
Concept
model
so that early
prevention
programmes
are instituted.
With respect to
the
seminars and workshops on the
two
chosen topics we will
be
extending invitations to specific persons to present a
paper
in a seminar
session,
and/or
participate as a group
leader
in the workshops.
However,
anyone
who
has a particular interest in either of the topics,
and
would
like to present a
paper
or
be
agroup leader, is invited to
forward
his/her
name
for consideration.
