<p>In April 2009 the Scottish Law Commission published a Report on <italic>Succession</italic><xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn1-1"><sup>1</sup></xref><fn id="fn1-1"><label>1</label><p>Scot Law Com No 215, available at <ext-link ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.scotlawcom.gov.uk" xlink:type="simple"><italic>http://www.scotlawcom.gov.uk</italic></ext-link>.</p></fn> containing its final proposals for the reform of this important area of law. In this symposium four writers approach these proposals in different ways. The proposals themselves and the thinking behind them are set out by David Nichols, formerly of the Scottish Law Commission, who was closely involved with their preparation, and with the preparation of the Scottish Law Commission's earlier attempt at reform in 1990.<xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn1-2"><sup>2</sup></xref><fn id="fn1-2"><label>2</label><p>Scottish Law Commision, Report on <italic>Succession</italic> (Scot Law Com No 124).</p></fn> Alan Barr gives an assessment of the proposals from the perspective of practice, while Dot Reid expresses misgivings as to the treatment of inheritance rights for children.
