Another man murdered his love rival and left his body in a burning car in Worcestershire, while a teenage mother was jailed for leaving her toddler daughter to starve to death while she partied in Solihull and Coventry.

A historic sex offender, from Erdington, and a gang who mistakenly gunned down a law student in a botched drive-by shooting were other cases to conclude in August.

BirminghamLive has taken a look back at some of the cases, including those in Birmingham and across the region.

Verphy Kudi

A teen mum who left her baby girl to starve to death as she partied in Coventry and Solihull has been jailed for nine-years.

Verphy Kudi left her 20-month-old daughter Asiah alone in her flat in Brighton more than 50 miles away as she partied for six days.

Asiah tragically died from influenza and starvation after having been left unattended in the flat for days on end, prosecutors say.

When paramedics were finally called to the flat on December 11 2019 after Kudi had returned, they found her "incoherent, distressed and distraught" and her daughter lying on the floor.

Kudi, now 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The jury heard that he had raped an underage girl and the evidence of the offence lay in the birth of a child.

There was no complaint at the time and the victim was unwilling to report the crime. But in 2019, she changed her mind and a police investigation took place which led to the successful prosecution.

Nicola Priest and Callum Redfern

An "uncaring" mother was jailed alongside her then-boyfriend of killing her three-year-old daughter Kaylee-Jayde Priest,

A post-mortem carried out after Kaylee's death revealed a total of 68 injuries, and although most were caused around the time of death, some dated back to two months before she died.

Mr Justice Foxton QC caged her mum Nicola Priest and lover Callum Redfern Both were convicted of the manslaughter, while Priest was also found guilty of an offence of child cruelty.

Redfern was sentenced to 14 years, with Both had denied killing Kaylee-Jayde who was found...
