37 ideas for a couple's day out in Wales you'll both love

It's easy to fall into a routine and before you know it, it's Monday again and you haven't been anywhere new.

We've come up with some ways to spend your free time with your significant other that should have something for everyone. Whether it's wine-tasting, a spa day, or something more exciting like riding rollercoasters, we've got a range of exciting date ideas to keep things fresh!

1. Explore Bodnant Garden

Situated above the River Conwy, with views stretching towards Snowdonia, the 80 acres of Bodnant Garden are easily some of the most beautiful in Wales.

You can enjoy the upper garden near Bodnant Hall with terraced gardens and informal lawns shaded by trees or the lower garden, known as the 'Dell', where you'll find the wild garden.

2. Visit a Michelin-starred restaurant

Five restaurants in Wales have a Michelin star. Two others in Wales have been awarded the Bib Gourmand, which recognises restaurants for good quality and good value cooking.

For a gastronomic tasting menu experience, head to Ynyshir which comprises accommodation and a destination Michelin star restaurant, located near the Snowdonia National Park. Chef Patron Gareth Ward serves a bold, and self-proclaimed ‘ingredient led and flavour driven’ tasting menu, using high quality Welsh and British produce.

3. Go for a sunrise swim in Penarth

Get your beloved up at the crack of dawn and go for a sunrise dip right next to the historic Penarth Pier. The pier extends into the Bristol Channel which has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world.

There's a growing movement of sunrise swimmers at Penarth called the 'Dawn Stalkers'. The group meets at sunrise every day for a dip in the water at Penarth seafront and welcomes everyone.

4. Relax with a luxurious spa day

Whenever life gets too hectic, there's nothing like a spa break to get the stress levels down. Spoil your loved one with a spa break at the luxury, five star St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay.

5. Gaze at the stars in the Elan Valley

What could be more romantic than looking up at the stars in a rural part of Wales The Elan Valley Estate achieved International Dark Sky Park status in 2015 and became the first privately-owned but publicly accessible park in the world to do so.

Several stargazing sites in the Elan Valley offer the best chances of seeing the cosmos, including the Teifi Pools, Claerwen Dam and the Craig Goch car park.

Organised stargazing events are held in the Elan Valley and Dark Sky Wales also take guided tours for small groups.

6. Go puffin spotting on Skomer

As well as the largest puffin colony in southern Britain, you'll also find half the world's population of Manx shearwaters. Make sure to bring your camera on a Skomer Island circular hike as there are loads of Puffins to observe and photograph in this secluded area.

Take a 15-minute ferry ride from Martin’s Haven to the island and walk the loop trail to see a huge variety of puffins, seals and seabirds along the way.

7. Visit a Welsh castle

There are so many dotted around Wales to explore. Visit the Cadw website to find one near you.

Couples may also enjoy the magnificent Castell Coch – the ultimate fairytale castle.

It occupies a stretch of woodland on the slopes above the village of Tongwynlais and the River Taff, about 10km from the centre of Cardiff.

The design combines the surviving elements of the medieval castle with 19th-century additions to produce a building which the historian Charles Kightly considered “the crowning glory of the Gothic Revival” in Britain. It is protected under UK law as a Grade I-listed building due to its exceptional architectural and historical interest.

8. Have a slap-up bottomless brunch

Have delicious dishes and free-pour fizz at Gin & Bake, part of the excellent Coffi Co brand and a unique offering in Mermaid Quay with a sheltered gin garden and live bakery in-store.
