previous crimes were admitted
and cleared up. Since then two
more persons have been detected
at other premises under similar
circumstances involving the lar-
ceny of cash. A matter of great
value from the police point
of
view in these cases was the fact
that the culprits continued to
carry out their purpose after the
photograph had been taken, and
that none of them had been dis-
turbed by the infra-red light
source.
Hitherto, police investigation
in cases of this nature has gen-
erally meant the use
of
anthracene,
and kindred dyes in an effort to Fig. 5
clear up the crime. In addition much embarrassment has been caused to
all members
of
the staff in premises where such crime has occurred.
They have had to face interrogation and subsequent examination under
the ultra-violet lamp in an effort to detect the presence of a trace and
contact with the powder placed at the scene of crime. This camera
pin-points the culprit and saves the time of the investigating officer.

Children

THE man who accosts young children and at the same time makes
an indecent remark or suggestion is not only a menace to the
community but also to himself. We, as police officers, know from
bitter experience that this is often the first step along the road
of
sexual
degradation, which leads at its lowest level to indecent exposure
but
more often to serious sexual assaults if the child is foolish enough to
remain in the company
of
such a person.
How to deal with such people is a problem which
everyone
of us
at some time has had to face. In a number of cases our action is made
perfectly clear, for the evidence is such as to constitute an offence of
attempting to procure a male person for an act of gross indecency
