This section provides an update on AES events, appointments, awards,
support grants and other news items.
AES Strategic Plan (2010–2020)—leading
evaluation in Australasia

The AES embarked upon a strategic planning process during 2009–2010 to
develop a 10-year Strategic Plan for the AES. The AES Ten Year Strategic Plan
(2010–2020) is titled Leading Evaluation in Australasia. The Strategic Plan and the
associated Implementation Plan can be located on the AES website at
<http://www.aes.asn.au/about>.
leadership role in the field of evaluation, and makes the
greatest contribution to its membership and the policy
context within which it operates.
A subsequent Implementation Plan was developed at the
February 2011 face-to-face Board meeting and this was
placed on the AES website for members to make further
comments and provide their input.
The consultation process, while comprehensive, was not
exhaustive in canvassing the views of all AES members.
The AES Board is thus interested to present both the
Strategic Plan and its associated Implementation Plan as
well as to hear more from members about their responses
to the broad directions to be adopted by the AES during
the next 10-year period (as identified and outlined in
the Strategic and Implementation Plans). A session at
the Sydney 2011 AES International Conference was set
aside to present and receive feedback on the Strategic and
Implementation Plans. The organisational chart presented
at the end of the Implementation Plan was the subject of
further input and discussion at the conclusion of the AES
conference during a half-day forum held on Saturday 3
September 2011.
The Strategic Plan and its accompanying
Implementation Plan provide a road map for the AES,
which is very exciting and presents a new proactive
role for the AES in Australia, New Zealand and the
broader Asia-Pacific region. The Strategic Plan and the
Implementation Plan will be used as living documents
and so the AES Board welcomes input into the Strategic
Plan and its accompanying Implementation Plan at any
stage of the process.
The strategic planning process was externally facilitated
during the February and June 2010 face-to-face Board
meetings. The process was preceded and informed by a
range of initial consultations that took place during late
2009 canvassing the views of AES regional representatives
and committees regarding strategic priorities for the
organisation. During the initial consultation process
regional representatives and committees were asked for
their views in regard to three main questions:
What are the central issues in the global context with 1
which the AES should be concerned over the next
decade?
What are the central and priority issues for the 2
discipline of evaluation to consider and address over the
next decade?
What issues should the AES respond to/take a position 3
on in relation to the broader context of evaluation over
the next decade?
The responses to these questions formed the basis for the
development of a Strategic Planning Scoping Paper that was
made available to the membership and placed on the AES
website in February 2010. The Scoping Paper provided a
worthwhile basis focus for the strategic planning sessions
that followed.
The Leading Evaluation in Australasia (2010–2020)
document is the outcome of this planning and consultation
process. The Strategic Plan will identify the ways in which
the AES can develop its strategic role over the next decade
to ensure that it maintains its relevance, expands its
