¨ckerlin is aimed at European
patent practitioners preparing for Paper A of the European
Qualifying Examinations (EQEs), as part of their qualification
as European Patent Attorneys.
There are few study re sources directed towards preparin g
for and sitting Paper A, which makes this book long overdue.
Starting with an overview of the examination require-
ments of Paper A, the book provides a comprehensive and
well-structured approach to the Paper A examination.
There are many formal examination requirements that
must be complied with and the book includes a compre-
hensive discussion of these and how candidates can ensure
they deal with them all.
Throughout, the book provides pointers to the extra
work that candidates should undertake as part of their
examination preparation, and the resources that they may
find useful both during preparation for the examination,
and for use on the day of the examination.
The early chapters of the book discuss in detail those
aspects of European patent law that must be considered
during the patent drafting process. These include interpret-
ing and analysing disclosures, determining the state of the
art, patentable and non-patentable inventions, novelty and
inventive step.
Numerous examples from past examination papers are
provided throughout the book, both as examples, and to
illustrate various technical points being made. The book
usefully includes material directed towards those sitting the
A paper in both the Electricity/Mechanics and the Chemis-
try fields.
The main part of the book goes through the process of
drafting a set of claims and a preliminary description as
part of the Paper A examination. Refreshingly, the book
includes not only things that candidates should do but, as
importantly, mentions practices that should be avoided.
While clearly aimed at assisting candidates in passing the
Paper A examination, the book contains many patent prac-
tice points that are equally applicable in the workplace.
A number of checklists arealso provided for use during the
examination to enable candidates to ensure that they have
covered the main aspects of the drafting process. Appendices
include model solutions for both a Mechanical examination
paper and a Chemistry examination paper, which provide a
useful overview of the methodologyof the book.
The publisher provides, with each copy of the print
edition, an option to purchase online access to the text of
the book for a small additional fee. This may be a valuable
extra feature to those patent practitioners who use online
resources.
While the book is obviously aimed at patent practitioners
sitting the EQE Paper A, it will also be useful to trainee
patent attorneys, and as an everyday resource for good
drafting practice.
However, for those preparing for the Paper A of the
EQEs, the book provides an invaluable study resource.
