CONSUMER PROTECTION

The Approval of Safety Standards Regulations 1987

Laid before Parliament 13th November 1987

Coming into force 7th December 1987

Whereas the Secretary of State has, in accordance with section 11(5) of the Consumer Protection Act 19871, consulted such organisations as appear to him to be representative of interests substantially affected by these Regulations, such other persons as he considers appropriate and the Health and Safety Commission:

Now, therefore, the Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 11 of the said Act, hereby makes the following Regulations:

S-1 These Regulations may be cited as the Approval of Safety...

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Approval of Safety Standards Regulations 1987 and shall come into force on 7th December 1987.

S-2 The Secretary of State, if he thinks it appropriate to do so...

2. The Secretary of State, if he thinks it appropriate to do so for the purposes of section 10(3) of the Consumer Protection Act 1987, may approve (in whole or in part), or cancel any such approval of, any standard of safety (including any amendment or revision of any such standard).

S-3 Any such approval or cancellation shall be effected by the...

3. Any such approval or cancellation shall be effected by the publication by the Secretary of State, in such manner as he considers appropriate, of a notice specifying the approval or cancellation together with, in each case, the place where copies of the standard of safety to which the approval or cancellation relates may be obtained.

S-4 The notice referred to in regulation 3 above shall state the...

4. The notice referred to in regulation 3 above shall state the date on which the approval or (as the case may be) cancellation shall take effect.

S-5 An approval given under these Regulations shall, if it is so...

5. An approval given under these Regulations shall, if it is so stated in the notice referred to in regulation 3 above, cease to have effect at the end of such period as may be specified in the notice.

S-6 A register of approvals given under these Regulations shall be...

6. A register of approvals given under these Regulations shall be kept by the Secretary of State at such premises and in such form as he may determine, and shall be open to public inspection.
