Abstract
Purpose The Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted a lot of attention in both industrial and academic fields
for recent years. Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly in recent years as well. AI naturally
combines with the Internet of Things in various ways, enabling big data applications, machine learning
algorithms, deep learning, knowledge discovery, neural networks and other technologies. The purpose of this
paper is to provide state of the art in AI powered IoT and study smart public services in China.
Design/methodology/approach This paper reviewed the articles published on AI powered IoT from 2009
to 2018. Casestudy as a research method hasbeen chosen.
Findings The AI powered IoT has been found in theareas of smart cities, healthcare, intelligent manufacturing
and so on. First, this study summarizes recent research on AI powered IoT systematically; and second, thisstudy
identifies key research topics related to the field and real-world applications.
Originality/value This research is of importa nce and significance to bo th industrial and acade mic
fields researchers w ho need to understand the curren t and future development of int elligence in IoT. To the
best of authorsknowledge, this is the fi rst study to review the lit erature on AI powered IoT from 2009
to 2018. This is also the first literature review on AI powered IoT with a case study of smart public service
in China.

1. Introduction
Rapid developments in software, hardware and communication technologies have
facilitated the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT refers to the network of
interrelated physical devices (home appliance, surveillance cameras, sensors, actuators,
displays, vehicles and so on) that are connected to collect, transfer and share data. The IoT
will provide new services to citizens, companies and public administrations after analyzing
the data generated by devices. Furthermore, the purpose of IoT is to develop an integrated
and intelligent environment where time, energy and money can be saved. The applications
of IoT include smart cities, decision making, smart healthcare, intelligent industry and
others (Atzori et al., 2010; Fan et al., 2014; Li, Xu and Zhao, 2015, 2018; Mao et al., 2016;
Xu, He and Li, 2014; Gubbi et al., 2013; Zanella et al., 2014; Chandrakanth et al., 2014; Nathani
and Vijayvergia, 2017; Whitmore et al., 2015).
Through technologies, especially intelligent technologies, time, energy and money
could be saved during the processes and service of smart cities and other application
areas. For example, power bills can be cut down by installing intelligent energy
monitoring system in smart cities. With the increasing popularity and development of
