Nicholas Gaskell is Professor of Maritime and Commercial Law at the Institute of Maritime Law, Faculty of Law, University of Southampton. He is qualified as a barrister and is a member of the maritime and commercial law chambers at 4 Essex Court, Temple, London. He has been employed at the University of Southampton since 1976 and from 1996-1999 he was also Director of the Institute of Maritime Law. He teaches maritime law at Southampton University and has lectured to the maritime profession widely in Southampton, London and overseas (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Poland, Germany, Greece, Italy, USA, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Holland, France, South Africa, Yugoslavia). He has written widely on areas of maritime law and practice, including the carriage of goods by sea, salvage, passenger claims, maritime pollution and limitation of liability. He is the editor of “Bills of Lading”, in Yates (ed.), Carriage of Goods by Land, Sea and Air (LLP, (1993-2000)).
