Abstract
We disc uss the balancing acts of inclusion and exclusion
by analysi ng how Somali migrants in Germany attem pt to
manoeuvre bet ween various norms, individu al interests
and various social net works. Building on Glick Schill er
and Ca glar (2016), whose work on urb an sociabilities em-
phasizes social relations in whi ch p eople act as equals,
we argue that ethnic (self- )identificati on is impor tant as
it ser ves as a basis for boundary- making an d for bon ding
within and br idging and linking between groups. T hus, a
focus on sociabilit y and ethnic identification (as a ca tegory
of prax is) can, in some cases, go hand in hand. Moreover,
we argue that inclusion into loca l Somali communities,
which is often dis cussed in public discourse as leading to
exclusion from German society, helps to establish connec-
tions. Simultaneously, exclusion through racism can le ad
to (self-)isolation of Somalis , but also places p ressure on
younger S omalis in pa rticular to forge alliances with non-
Somali Germans to stabilize their situation. Balancing social
inclusion and exclusion among Somali migrant s in Germany
therefore can have ambiguous and at times paradoxical
outcomes.
