Abstract
This paper prese nts a study ex ploring how migrants’ be-
longing shapes their rem ittances among Bangl adeshi mi-
grants in Los Angeles. Based on m igrants’ perception, the
paper recognizes the centrality of the family and origin
community in mig rants’ remittances both in the NELM
and in the transnational perspectives. It empirically inves-
tigates migrants’ belongi ng and reco gnizes their member-
ship in the ir parents’ family, their own nuclear family, joint
family in cluding siblings w ith their respe ctive families, ex-
tended family including multiple generat ions and a commu-
nity of origin. It finds migrants’ belonging simultaneous ly to
the destinati on and origin countries, and also confirms the
presence of ‘friction’ in such belonging, indicative of both
cooperation and conflict in migr ants’ remittances allowing
for explaining changes in their remittances such as remit-
tances decay and resurgence. This study offers guideline
for f urther empir ical research on migra nts’ transnation al-
ism and remitt ances with policy implic ations regarding the
developmental consequences of remittances.
