Introduction
The following bibliography focuses mainly on
programs which can run on IBM microcomputers
and compatibles under the operating system PC
DOS/MS DOS, and which can be used in online
information and documentation work. They fall
into the following categories:
Software for terminal emulation/telecom-
munication/uploading/downloading, mainly
to communicate with databanks/host com-
puters and to aid online searching of
databases.
Software to reformat/convert the captured
information, so that it can be loaded/imported
in the databases managed by a program of the
next category.
Software for the local storage and retrieval of
text information; these programs can be
applied to manage the received and
reformatted information, as well as other
manual input.
Software for word processing where these
programs can be used mainly to prepare files
for uploading, to clean up downloaded files,
and to edit and amend text information stored
in a database which is managed by a program
of
the
next category.
Software for computer-assisted instruction on
online information retrieval from databanks
which contain mainly text information, such
as bibliographies.
The index consists of an alphabetical listing of
the software
packages,
the numbers referring to the
bibliographic entries, which are in numerical
order. For those books and articles which are over-
views of the field, four general categories have
been created Communications Software,
General and Software for Information Storage and
Retrieval.
When articles in journals
do
not run on sequential
pages,
the number of pages on which the article is
found appears in brackets after the initial page
ref-
erence, e.g. p.16 (8).
