jective' welfarist
approach.
However,
neither
the
impact
of
the
criminal justice
approach
on
older people
nor
the
consequences
for
the
criminal justice system
based
on
their thesis
is
mentioned.
The structure of
the
book
is
its
biggest
drawback;
the
writing style
is
uneven
and
the
use of subheadings distracting
to
the
narrative
flow.
However,
the central
arguments
are
interesting
and
as
the
authors
state
'break

ground'
(p.
5).
I
would
consider
this
essential
reading
for
any
scholar
of
victimology,
gerontology
or
criminology.

This
book reports a
unique
crime
survey,
not
only
because of
the
particular
circumstances
in
Northern Ireland
at
the
time
reported,
but
also
because it
makes
a novel attempt
to
disaggregate
the
statistics
and
learn
about
individual,
small
communities' responses
to
crime.
The
inclusion
of Northern Ireland
in
interna-
tional
surveys
of
crime
and
victimisation
threw
some
light
upon
unanswered
questions, but these
approaches
failed
to
interrogate
what
the
authors
call
'signi-
ficant variations ...
in
the
different communities'
(p.
4).
Catholic, Protestant
and
mixed
areas
of Northern
Ireland,
they
reasoned,
would
experience
crime
and
victimisation
differently.
By
constructing a careful
sample
and
survey
method,
they
have
been
able
to
prove
their
hypothesis.
In
doing
so,
they
have
also
contributed significantly
to
survey
methodology.
The
fieldwork
took
place
in
1996,
just after
the
first
cease-fire
in
Northern
Ireland
broke
down.
There
was
a
widespread
belief
at
that
time
that
crime
-
and
youth
crime
in
particular-
was
escalating
because
of
the
climate of violence
