Introduction
In a world with pervasive crises and increasingly diverse communities, it has become
critical to address how crisis management must adapt to this, and how to provide more
eff‌icient and effective life-saving actions for people. While the notion of social equity in
crisis management has seen a lot of scholarship in recent years, there has been a gap in the
comprehensive understanding of what is social equity in crisis management and all the
different threads of intersectionality that need consideration for this. Knepper, Evans, and
Henley provide this edited volume as that attempt of a comprehensive piece to connect
various aspects of intersectionality that need to be noted. From an educational perspective,
this book provides a guide to the emergency management, public health, and public
administration f‌ields on how intersectionality isnt just a buzz word, but rather, a critical
consideration for how to provide equitable services.

The editors dive into the topic with a well-situated Chapter 1, building the foundation of
the terminology, what they mean in crisis management, and how societys tendency to
focus on demographic categories as exclusive and def‌inedhas marginalized and further
burdened some groups more than others (Knepper et al., 2023: 6). The articulation of the
challenges in using intersectionality as a lensis well conceptualized to then engage the
remaining chapters and topics of the book.
Whetstone and Demirozs Chapter 2 discuss how limited attention on the topic of
