witness intimidation incidents. This comprehensive research includes first hand
accounts from those currently under the protection of Strathclyde's Witness
Protection Programme, providing explanations on why they chose to participate,
the hardships that being in the programme impose, and theiroverall perception
of
the value
of
the programme. In addition, thereis valuable information on the
detrimental impact that participation in witness protection programmes has on its
participants, as revealed by the increased suicide rates amongst those seeking
refuge.
Fyfe provides aconscientious review of the available research on the little
studied topic
of
witness intimidation. In 138 pages, heisableto summarize
thoroughly his own research with respect to the programme at the Strathclyde
Police. Fyfe briefly reviews programmes in Canada and the United States and
draws comparisons between the programmes in North America and United
Kingdom. Fyfe's research would be of particular interest to anyone looking at
revamping acurrent programme or establishing one in an areawhere none
currently exists. The input fromthe witnesses inthe programme currently
provides aunique insight rarely seenas to theirneedsandperception
of
the
success of the Witness Protection Programmes. This literature is idealfor those
studying the effects
of
intimidation on witnesses and the effectiveness of the
Witness Protection Programmes; especially of interest to those studying newly
developing programmes. Referencing his ownstudy,Fyfe identifies the frequent
fears of witnesses and examines the optionof the WitnessProtectionProgramme.
For anyone who has experience with victims particularly as they travelthrough
the criminal justice system, the information contained within this book will be
familiar and is likelyto be
of
little concern other than to formalize their own
perceptions. Sarah Redfearn
