the trauma
worse
for
the
individual,
and
for
other
members,
but
it
can
also
be a powerful
force
for
overcoming
trauma
if
engaged
as
a group
and
guided
in
therapy.
Perhaps
the
chapter
would
have
benefited
from
a clear example of
this
work.
The chapter
on
war-related
trauma
is
notable
for
having
a world-wide
focus
which
includes a
very
good
section
on
the
experiences of
women
war
veterans.
It
points out
that,
despite
wide-ranging
programmes
of therapeutic intervention
for
this
group
internationally, controlled
outcome
research
is
largely
absent.
The
chapter
is
well
organised,
with
a clear psychotherapeutic
framework,
but
it
would
benefit
from
more
examples
than
it
manages.
Chapter
Nine
introduces a depar-
ture
from
the
psychotherapeutic
framework
by
formulating
a useful description
of group-based cognitive-behavioural treatments
in
disaster-related
PTSD,
ac-
companied
by
examples of
the
recording
tools
used,
reproduced
in
the
appen-
dices.
This
kind
of detail
could
have
been
useful elsewhere
in
the
book.
Perhaps
what
is
most
impressive
about
this
book
is
the
range
of
trauma
tackled; although
it
does not include
enough
actual
case
study
material,
where
it
does,
and
where
it
presents detailed treatment instructions,
it
is
informative
and
useful
to
both
practitioner
and
student,
and
also
to
people
from
related
professions.
Clearly,
practitioners
are
likely
to
be
drawn
to
one
book
or
the
other,
depend-
ing
on
the
theoretical
underpinnings
of
their
current practice;
however,
it could
be
argued
that
both
books
would
be
informative
and
useful
to
professionals
working
with
post-traumatic
stress
sufferers.
