The origins of this book can be traced to a grant application to the Arts and
Humanities Research Council Network that enabled the establishment of a successful
‘Tracking people’network. I should say from the outset that I was one of the indivi-
duals who attended the network events in 2016/2017 and contributed to the pro-
fessional discussions. I am also kindly acknowledged by Professor Mike Nellis in this
book at the end of Chapter 7 ‘Smartphone electronic monitoring (EM), artificial intel-
ligence and the mass supervision question in the USA’.
The network aimed to be both cross disciplinary and cross sector bringing
together a range of people with experience and expertise in different aspects of
tracking from different settings and jurisdictions under the broad banner of ‘track-
ing’. The mix of people in attendance produced several interesting discussions, gen-
erating some surprising and original ideas and insights. The novel and challenging
discussions helped forge new professional relationships that perhaps would not nor-
mally have been considered but in retrospect make a lot of sense.
Tracking is well known to take place in criminal justice settings but relatively little
is known about the use of tracking devices in other settings. For example, the use of
tracking devices by those caring for those with dementia or other mental health pro-
blems, or those working in the fields of terrorism, immigration or children’s services.
Little is also known about the technical aspects of tracking or the use/misuse of com-
mercially available tracking devices.
