Despite the provisions of the
2011 Fixed Terms Parliament Act
that were designed to ensure
that the UK would usually only
hold elections once every five years, in
December 2019 Britain went to the polls
in advance of the prescribed timetable
for the second time in a row. As on the
previous occasion in 2017, the early poll
was occasioned by Brexit. Last time, the

sought an early ballot because she was
concerned that she would have difficulty
getting a Brexit deal through the House of
Commons on the back of the small overall
majority of 12 she had inherited from David
Cameron – only to lose that majority and
finding herself having to run a minority
government.
