Britney Spears' sobs at conservatorship termination as fiancé declares 'history is made'

The pop superstar, 39, had been fighting to end the complex legal arrangement she was placed under in 2008 amid substance abuse and mental health issues.

The conservatorship had long outraged the singer’s millions of fans, but pressure to terminate it had ratcheted up over the last 12 months as the previously silent Spears brought her grievances into the public eye.

As the end of the legal agreement was read out in court, Britney and her fiancé Sam both took to social media to share their emotional responses.

They joined legions of fans and celebrity supporters around the world in reacting to the news, that has caught huge press attention in recent years.

Breaking her silence for the first time, Britney wasted no time in thanking her loyal #FreeBritney fans who had again gathered outside the court in Los Angeles for the hearing.

"Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen " she tweeted.

Acknowledging the movement, she added the the hashtag #FreedBritney.

She later returned to Instagram to share a slew of pictures of her posed up outside her home wearing a green crop top and white shorts.

The singer followed this up with a wordless and captionless video of her smiling into the camera lens.

Britney's husband-to-be Sam Asghari also took to social media to share his joy.

He shared a simple image of the word 'Freedom' on a pink background and wrote alongside it: "History was made today. Britney is free."

Celebrity pals of Britney also joined in the celebrations.

Taking time out from her recent wedding, Paris Hilton -who was known for partying with Britney in the 00s -tweeted to say she was 'so happy this day has finally come.

"You’re the most resilient, kind and inspiring soul. We all love you so so much! Your best days are yet to come!" she told her pal.

Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace posted a throwback photo of her and Spears, along with the message: "Freedom is a human right. My heart is smiling for you, Britney. Congratulations on your regained and deserved emancipation."

While music legend Cher tweeted 'Whoa she's free. Free as a bird" followed by a series of cake and ice cream emojis.

Olly Alexander from band Years and Years declared Friday's Freedom day the 'best day ever'.
