Brookside returning to TV on BritBox with classic episodes set to air; Famous Channel 4 soap Brookside is set for a surprising television return, nearly 20 years after its final episode aired.

Brookside will soon make a shock return to TV on BritBox, 18 years after the Channel 4 soap aired its last episode.

It was back in 1982 that the Liverpool set show made its debut, on the day that the channel launched and it became an unmissable programme for many viewers.

From Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond, Brookside became Channel 4's highest rated programme for a number of years in the mid-1980s, with audiences regularly in excess of eight million viewers.

It became known for not shying away from hard hitting issues and controversial storylines.

Memorable storylines include the rape of Time's Sue Johnston shaken by 'claustrophobia' of harrowing new BBC drama s character Sheila Grant; the many drug struggles of Jimmy Corkhill, one of which saw him kill neighbour Tony Dixon whilst high on cocaine; the incest storyline involving Nat and Georgia and of course the body under the patio storyline which saw Mandy Jordache kill evil husband Trevor after he mentally and physically abused her and sexually abused youngest daughter Rachel.

Mandy's daughter, Beth, played by Anna Friel, was also famous for being part of the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss on British TV.

Other well known families to live in Brookside Close over the years included The Farnhams, The Johnsons and later on, The Shadwicks and The Murrays, with memorable characters like Sinbad, Bev and Katie, with stars like Jennifer Ellison, Claire Sweeney, Phillip Olivier and the late Bernie Nolan appearing on screen.
