they should remember, as a doctor reminded
the writer in a diatribe on the impotence of health authorities to deal
with veneral disease problems effectively, measles, scarlet fever and other
comparatively innocent diseases are already notifiable whether the
sufferer wills it or not.
The"
grave question of
principle"
now raised
has therefore already been settled.
The
second suggestion one would make is that the sale of drugs for
female irregularities should be forbidden, and a rigorous control
instituted over the sale of drugs which can be used as abortifacients.
Abortion, like arson, is probably one of the crimes with which
the
Police of this country fail to grapple properly.
Thought
should be given
to it.
The
Police might even decide to try and rouse the public con-
science, a pleasanter
but
harder task than trying to appease it.

A Business Man looks at the
Police Service
THAT fools rush in where angels fear to tread is a maxim with which
most police officers will heartily agree; yet almost all of
them
can
also recollect how in the early days of their service youthful enthusiasm
speedily convinced them that the Police Service
could-and
should-
be
run
on far more businesslike lines than those favoured by their
immediate superiors.
Which peculiarity of human nature accounts for the fact that a
great many war-time police
auxiliaries-and
particularly those who
have held administrative posts in commercial
life-are
firmly convinced
that the Police Service would benefit from the adoption of more busi-
nesslike methods. At the same time, most of them have by now served
a sufficiently long apprenticeship to have got rid of their first superficial
impressions and to have formed more definite opinions, which in the
interests of both the Police and public might be well worthy of con-
sideration by police administrators.
It
may, therefore, be useful to
consider some aspects of police administration as they appear to
the
modern business man, and
if-as
is quite
possible-the
views here set
forth are speedily contradicted by the reply of more experienced
