INTRODUCTION
A career can be d efined as ‘the evolving sequ ence of a person's work experience ove r time’ (Arthur et al., 198 9,
8). This definiti on focuses on two variables: o ccupational mobility and tim e. However, in analysing migrants’ ca-
reers, we shoul d add a third variable: geograp hical mobility. As human capi tal transferability r emains imperfect,
moving from the ho me country's labour market to t hat of another country affe cts an individual's work sit uation
and opport unities for career develop ment. However, not all migrants st ay in the receiving country t ill the end of

Abstract
The key aim of this paper is to exp lore the impact of mi-
gration experie nces on the career tr ajectories of Polish
returning migrant s. Focusing on the inter section betwe en
career and migrat ion studies, we aim to answer the follow-
ing research ques tions: (1) What are the shapes of retu rn-
ing migrants’ car eer trajectorie s?; (2) What is their sense
of stability in th e labour market? and (3) Are retu rning
migrants able to tr ansfer skills that th ey gained working
abroad? If yes, which one and how it depends on the shape
of their career tr ajectories? Based on the qualitative stu dy
of Polish migrants who r eturned from the UK , we have
distinguished fou r types of career t rajectories: asce nding
career, highly diversifi ed career, fragmented ca reer and
steady career. Buildin g a typology of ret urning migrants’
careers, we consid ered whole trajec tories (the situation
before, during and af ter migration) and both ver tical and
horizontal labour m arket mobility.
