Hence the (Anglican) cathedral church of St Nicholas, Newcastle-upon-Tyne has for decades - probably since 1882 - been known as Newcastle Cathedral.

Similarly the (Roman) cathedral church of St Mary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne has for decades been known as Hexham and Newcastle Cathedral after the diocese it was built to serve.
