Celebrating the centennial anniversary of Public
Administration
On behalf of the editorial team and our editorial board, we would like to thank you for reading the latest issue of
Public Administration. The current issue is a particularly exciting one for the journal and the discipline of public admin-
istration. With the publication of this issue, we are excited to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the journal!
And with this celebration comes a milestone that no other academic journal within the field of public administration
has yet to obtain. Such an anniversary is an opportunity to look back over the journal's history and contributions to
public administration, along with an opportunity to discuss the future of the discipline over the next 100 years.
In planning the anniversary issue of the journal, we wanted to celebrate not only what the journal has accom-
plished but what it can still achieve. Throughout our history, Public Administration has been led by some amazing edi-
tors, and we wanted to incorporate these editors into the celebration. We invited the past living editors to write an
editorial for the anniversary issue to accomplish this. We asked the editors to reflect on their experience at the
journal's helm and how they view its place in the field. The editors could then interpret this theme how they best
saw fit. Rhodes (2022) and Lodge (2022) both interpreted the theme in very different ways. While Rhodes focused
more on what he learned as an editor, Lodge concentrated on the changes he observed with the journal and the field
during his tenure. One consistent thing across the editorials is that they are fun and enlightening views on who we
are as a journal.
For the issue, we wanted the articles to reflect on the journal, its history, and its contribution to the field. In the
first article, Vogel and Hattke (2022) were kind enough to conduct the most thorough bibliographic study in the field.
By pulling and studying each article that the journal has published throughout its history, they show the development
and progression of the journal and the field of public administration. This piece is followed by Aoki et al. (2022), who
provide a closer reflection of the journal as they consider what are the most important contributions to the field that
have been published in the last 30 years. In addition to their article being published here, it is included alongside
these important contributions in a special virtual issue of the journal published on our website.
Next, we feature two articles that reflect on the future of the field from the authors' unique perspectives. In the
first of these two pieces, McDonald et al. (2022), reflect on how they have seen the discipline progress. Then,
reflecting on their roles as editors and their responsibility of helping direct the future of the public administration,
they lay out an agenda for future research. In the second piece, Schwoerer et al. (2022) reflect on their experience as
students and doctoral candidates and their passion for the field to provide a direction for public administration. This
reflection is used to create a vision for the field guided by the next generation of scholars.
In the final four articles of this special issue, the authors of the manuscripts focused on critical topics that are
important to the field of public administration and the journal's history. Elliott et al. (2022) discuss the status of pub-
lic administration in the United Kingdom. While Public Administration has always maintained an international perspec-
tive, the journal's roots come from the Royal Institute of Public Administration in the United Kingdom. As part of the
100th anniversary of the journal, we wanted to pay our respect to these roots, and we felt that the best way of doing
so was to honor the tradition of public administration in the United Kingdom within our pages. We also wanted to
respect the journal's history in a unique way. In the first issue of Public Administration, the journal published an article
on the status of public administration education. Certainly, a lot has changed over the past 100 years, and we felt
