Legal Professional Privilege (LPP)

LPP ensures that certain communications involving a lawyer and their client remain confidential unless the client agrees otherwise.

There are two main forms of LPP:

  • legal advice privilege
  • litigation privilege.

To qualify for either, a document must be confidential and meet all other requirements for the privilege to be engaged.

If you obtain any documentation where there is a suggestion of LPP, you should:

  • stop reading it
  • not share it with anybody
  • seek advice from the Solicitor’s Office immediately.

This may include legal material, journalistic advice and medical data.
