Anastasia Christou and Eleanore Kofman's book entitled Gender and Migration is an open- access shor t reader that
critically reviews the evolution of gender and migrat ion studies prima rily in Europe. This short reader wil l appeal
to scholars working on these fields, as it provides new insights into the conceptual developments, methodological
shifts and the ir implications for a gendered unde rstanding of migration over th e past 30 years. Incorporat ing both
men and women, ma sculinities, s exualities and intersection al insights into their analytical discussions, C hristou
and Kofman provide a comprehensive literature review covering four major areas in the field: gendered labour
market; the (t ransnational) families; gendered asylum and integr ation. Th us they demonstrate that the d evel-
opment of th e gender and migration scholarship is not entire ly uniform across socio- geographic contexts, as
“concepts of women/gender and feminist id eas “ that “trave l across national, linguistic, cultural and econom ic
boundaries … a re changed in process” (Fresnoza - Flot, 2022; Hale, 2009).
In Chap ter 1, t he authors give a brief overv iew of th e development of gender and migr ation studie s. From
the 1970s to th e early 1980s, s tudies draw heavil y upon works th at focus on the significance of wo men's active
role as init iators and actor s of migration, t he household, t he reproductive labour, and temporal ities of migrator y
movements. The migrati on process is perceived as a gendered phenomenon, in which gender reflect ed the practices
and representations of femininity and masculinit y and relationships between women and men. In the 1990s, the
feminization of migration, referring to a relative change in the gender compositi on of migration flows has provided
an importa nt impetus for the field of gend er and migration (Castle s & Miller, 1993). However, some schola rs have
nuanced these claims, arguing t hat gender ed patte rns are more complex geographically and over time , while
introducing the con cept of intersectionality, referring to how overlapping identities – including race, class, et h-
nicity, religion an d sexual orientation – impact the way oppressi on and discrimination are experienced (Donato &
Gabaccia, 2015).
Chapter 2 fol lows with major the oretical developmen ts and methodolo gical and ethical issues in research on
gendered mobi lities. In this regard, t he authors first an alyse the ‘gendered geogr aphies of power (GGP) appro ach
that dire cts research ers’ attention to how gend er operates simultaneously on multiple spatial and s ocial scales,
such as the self, the familial and t he institutiona l across tran snational terrain s (Mahler & Pessar, 2001). But , the
authors signify the gendered ex periences of men migrants , especially their vulne rabilities, ma rginalisations a nd
personal/family ties all of which disclose critical insights on their inequalities and increase their visibility. Secondly,
they revisit the concept of inters ectionality, that has become progre ssively more influential in migrati on studies in
recent years. It examines how the overlap of “categories of difference” such as gender, class and race produces and
reinforces the margin ality and oppression of social minorit ies, notably Black women (Anthia s, 2014). Nonetheless,
Christou an d Kofman recount how “class” as a concept in the ge ndered geographies of mobilities remain s largely
