Abstract
Purpose –There have been numerous publications on human monkeypox since it was reported. With the help
of bibliometric analysis, this study examined research hotspots and future trends related to human
monkeypox. Science mapping was used in this study to identify influential monkeypox researchers,
institutions, articles, keywords, thematic structures, and clusters of articles.
Design/methodology/approach–Based on a validated search query, bibliometric analysis of data collected
from Web of Science from 1989 to September 2022 was conducted. Using the “Title-Keyword-Abstract”search
option, the search query consisted of keywords “Monkeypox”OR “Monkeypox virus”OR “monkeypox”
OR “monkey pox”OR “MPXV.”With the state-of-the-art tools Bibliometrix package of R Studio and
VOSviewer, performance analysis and science mapping, as a part of standard bibliometric research of
monkeypox research were conducted.
Findings –Researchers published 708 monkeypox papers from 1989 to September 2022, with American
researchers publishing 460 papers. Further, USA had the highest international cooperation in terms of
collaborative research output. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a global leader in
monkeypox research since it is the most prolific and collaborative organization. There have been the most
published papers on monkeypox in the Journal of Virology. Damon Inger K is also the most prolific and
influential researcher in monkeypox research, with the highest number of publications and citations. In total,
1,679 keywords were identified in the study. From the cluster analysis four themes were identified in
monkeypox research. They are (1) clinical features, (2) monkeypox virus epidemiology, (3) monkeypox virus
vaccine defense, and (4) monkeypox virus-related treatment measures.
Originality/value –Analysis of collaboration, findings, networks of research, and visualization separates
this study from traditional metrics analysis. Currently, there are no similar studies with similar objectives
based on the authors’knowledge.

1. Introduction
The contemporary world is encountering an ongoing outbreak of monkeypox, a zoonotic
disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPV or MPXV) (Bunge et al., 2022). It is a species of
double-stranded DNA virus belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family
responsible for illness in humans and animals (Bosworth et al., 2022;Kozlov, 2022;Mauldin
et al., 2022;Simpson et al., 2020). The monkeypox virus was first identified in monkeys in 1958

in an animal facility at the Staten Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark (Li et al., 2010;
Magnus et al., 1959). However, the first case of monkeypox in humans was reported in a
9-month-old boy in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970, formerly known as Zaire
(Breman et al., 1980). Since then, sporadic outbreaks of monkeypox cases have been reported
across the USA, Israel, Singapore, United Kingdom, and other central and western African
countries over the past fifty years (Reed et al., 2004;Sklenovsk
a and Van Ranst, 2018;
Thornhill et al., 2022;UKHSA, 2022;Zhang et al., 2022;Zhang et al., 2022).
The recent outbreak of monkeypox was confirmed in May 2022. Between May 13, 2022,
and May 21, 2022, a total of 92 laboratory-confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of
monkeypox were testified in the USA, UK, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany,
Italy, Canada, France, Belgium, and Australia (WHO, 2022b). The World Health Organization
(WHO) declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on
July 23, 2022 (WHO, 2022a). As of December 9, 2022, 111 countries worldwide have reported a
staggering 82,474 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 65 fatalities (CDC, 2022). Despite its
rarity, monkeypox is considered a public health concern due to its potential to cause severe
illness and death and be used as a bioterrorism agent.
Monkeypox is an old foe with new challenges that severely threaten health, social and
economic structures worldwide. To mitigate this crisis, substantial scientific evidence is
required to frame optimal strategies to safeguard vulnerable groups. Thus, scholars and
academicians have conducted intensive research in the spectrum of monkeypox to obliterate
the monkeypox virus. As a result, an unprecedented surge in publications related to the
monkeypox virus has been observed. Therefore, it is necessary to measure, monitor, assess,
and comprehend the entire monkeypox research field so that every fragment of knowledge
containing innovation and solutions to halt monkeypox infection comes to light for better
decision-making. In this regard, bibliometric techniques are widely used to analyze, assess,
and present the current knowledge structures of a particular research field. According to
Riahinia et al. (2022), there is no doubt about the importance and superiority of bibliometrics
and related methods, which provide a comprehensive perspective and reveal possible
evolutionary paths for related studies in a short time frame. Further, with the help of
bibliometric findings, we can identify the key journals, structure, and hidden features
(Khan et al., 2022). Moreover, as a research tool, bibliometric studies facilitate academic
development in numerous research fields by helping scholars make decisions based on
metrics and enhancing their academic performance (Alam et al., 2022).
This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of global research on monkeypox,
including an analysis of the current state of the field, a comparative assessment of research
performance across different nations, an identification of the most productive research
institutions, and an exploration of the key research themes and areas, as indicated by the
most commonly used keywords. Conspicuously, the examination of behavior patterns of
peer-reviewed scientific literature publications in a particular domain can provide valuable
insights into the direction and trajectory of the field, shedding light on where it is headed and
how it is likely to progress in the future (Wijewickrema, 2022). Moreover, research
development in the field can be kept up-to-date through this evaluation, which can be used as
a benchmark for monitoring the evolution and trends of research in the area and achieving
global goals.
In terms of the scientometric analysis, a review of the literature on monkeypox would
likely find that there has been a steady increase in the number of publications on the topic
over the years. This is likely due to the growing recognition of the importance of the disease
and the need for further research. The majority of these publications are likely to be in the
form of research articles, with a smaller number of review articles and case reports. In terms
of citations, the most highly cited papers on monkeypox are likely to be those that provide
important insights into the epidemiology and clinical presentation of the disease, as well as
