Abstract
Purpose In an effort to position higher education institutions to survive in this f‌iercely competitive environment, the paper aims to identify the
direct and indirect relationships between higher education institutional positioning and exogenous factors (student engagement, employability,
technology adaptation, teaching quality, and moral values).
Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional data was collected from 1,015 students studying in the pre-f‌inal year of graduation or post-
graduate course/program from various educational institutions that were shortlisted based on the Indian NAAC and NIRF rankings. Thereafter,
robust assessment criteria of PLS-SEM were used for model assessment and computation of results.
Findings The f‌indings revealed that to develop the greatest platform for upcoming young talent, higher educational institutional positioning
ought to be addressed as a priority, which in turn will result in better living standards for upcoming generations.
Research limitations/implications Framing strategiesfor urban students can nevermatch those living in rural areas,as they are deprived of money
due to their level of upbringing from childhood, which creates a high difference in the psychological mindset of studentswhile choosing a career path.
Practical implications The higher positioning of educational institutions clearly ref‌lects the authentic learning environment, with professionalism
leading to better student engagement with best industry practice.
Originality/value Research novelty is highlighted as a more focused and streamlined approach to studentscareer development and institution
branding by reanalyzing and grouping various concepts of institutional positioning into a single model.

1. Introduction
Higher education in India has grown nearly 400% since 2001, with
the private sector accounting for a large portion of the growth,
resulting in both growth and severe challenges (IndiasHigher
Education Landscape, 2022). Building a dedicated and long-
lasting connection with students has turned out to be
an important and strategic objective for higher educational
institutions to thrive and sustain their competitiveness (Schlesinger
et al., 2017). Student satisfaction and institutional accountability
are the indicators accountable nowadays for the positioning of
higher educational institutions in light of the increased competition
(Dusi and Huisman, 2021;Langan and Harris, 2019). Moreover,
according to Carvalho et al. (2021), branding tactics of higher
educational institutions, such as positive reviews on social media
platforms, do inf‌luence studentsdecisions about choosing their
career path. Also, the positioning of institutions and the creation of
niches through the provision of differentiated programs have
sparked competition among private and government higher
educational institutions in regard to the f‌lexibility of programs,
owing to which the government institutions are facing intense
competition (Buckner and Gong, 2021). Caspersen and Smeby
(2021) emphasized the direct and indirect relationships of
vocational programs offered in higher educational institutions in
shaping the studentsskills, competence and practical knowledge,
having a direct ref‌lection of workplace experience. Bureau et al.
(2022) even ranked student strengths for self-motivation and
determination in relation to their psychological needs supported by
autonomy support in the form of (teachers or parents) where both
teachers and parents play a very signif‌icant role in framing
studentssense of self-motivation and physiological need
satisfaction, but the teacher role is still stronger in studentslives
than that of parents. The use of information technology through e-
learning even has an increasing impact on higher education,
resulting in a new and f‌lexible learning environment for students
(Bøe et al., 2021). While studying the behavioral patterns among
active and passive learners for video-based learning, four critical
areas were identif‌ied where active learners showed signs of higher
frequent social communication followed by information search
and environmental consideration while learning in comparison to
browsing, termed as favorite workin the case of passive learners
(Yoon et al., 2021). Furthermore, a consistent level of
commitment between higher institutes and alumni even has
resulted in enhanced theoretical and practi cal knowledge of
