LONG
the dusty Indian high road a simple old rustic is
rtwending
his way with twenty rupees tied in the corner of
his loin-cloth, perhaps the proceeds of the sale of some cattle.
Fifty yards ahead of him walks another wayfarer, who suddenly
stops, and picking up something from the ground, examines
it intently.
, Look what I have found,' he says, as the old rustic comes
level with him.
'A
gold bangle.'
The
old man, envying the other his luck, stops to have
a look at the find, a heavy bangle, with all the surface appear-
ance of good solid gold.
, Some traveller must have dropped it,' says the finder.
,
It's
true gold. Worth a lot of money.'
The
old fellow agrees that it must be worth a lot of money.
,Forty or fifty rupees 1at least,' says the finder.
'I
wish
I had found a bag of forty rupees instead.
It's
cash I am in
need
of-I'd
swop this for thirty rupees.
I'd
swop it for
twenty cash down. Would you like to take it and give me
twenty rupees ?'
It
is a simple old fellow,
but
not so simple that he does
not know that a gold bangle of that weight is worth consider-
ably more than twenty rupees, nor is he so simple that he is
ready to complete the deal without the customary Oriental
effort to beat down the vendor. He offers ten rupees.
,No,' says the finder, ' I won't part with it for ten. I will
keep it until I get to my native town, though I am badly in
need of immediate cash. Any goldsmith will give me at least
thirty-five rupees for it.'
