The 2001 annual conference was
held at Rydges Lakeside Hotel in
Canberra, and returned to the more
formal session and workshop
format of previous years. Despite
the Ansett collapse and the
international situation which may
have discouraged a number of
intending overseas visitors,
attendance was well up to that of
past years, with over 220 full-time
registrations, 32 day registrations
and 290 workshop places.
Invited plenary speakers included
Professor Mel Mark, Professor
Lawrence Green, Dr Judith Ottoson
and Dr Konrad Katzenmeyer from
the US, while local guest speakers
included Pat Barrett, the
Commonwealth Auditor-General,
and Michael Raper, outgoing
President of the Australian Council
of Social Service.
Rather than publish a formal
report, we have decided to start
with a point of view from one of the
conference organising committee,
and follow it up with the
impressions of a number of people
who attended, starting with one of
our very few overseas visitors who
managed to get there under her
own steam in spite of all the
discouragements.
The 19th International AES Conference
A Treasurer’s perspective
The editors of the Journal have asked me to give an organiser’s opinion as to
the success of the Canberra conference.
As with any large undertaking there are both surprises and
disappointments. Of the latter, we would have liked to have been able to have
the refereed papers in their final form prior to the conference. Similarly we
would have liked to have had copies of all non-refereed papers on the
conference CD, or at the latest attached to the conference website within a
week of the conference. We did not succeed in any of these endeavours.
Further, we would have been happier had not Ansett collapsed or, after
the conference, our Internet service provider (Asia Online) go the same way.
However, the glass was quite considerably more than ‘half full’.
Our vision of a venue for a broad exchange of ideas was achieved in
spades. The workshop attendance exceeded our budget by some 100. The
availability of six and occasionally seven breakout sessions provided
participants with a significant range of views on topical subjects. Further, the
keynote speakers were of excellent value as well as being marvellous
ambassadors for the evaluation profession.
With the inclusion of attractions such as the principal sponsor’s breakfast
meeting, the poster sessions and the evaluation exhibition, the conference
broke new ground and set high targets for subsequent events.
You may wonder why the heading spoke of a Treasurer’s perspective and
yet there has been no mention of
finances to date. This is quite simply
the result of the marvellous support
provided by the AES Board and the
Canberra Convention Bureau in
making bridging funding available.
This was followed by the fantastic
support of our sponsors, KPMG
Consulting Australia, Health and Aged
Care, ATSIC, Prometheus Information,
Colmar Brunton Social Research and
ATSIC. As a consequence, I had no
cash-flow concerns to worry about –
rather to determine the level of funds
that would be put back into AES coffers. This now stands at approximately
$40,000.
So my overview is as follows:
■the conference was a success from a professional development perspective;
■the venue and the timetable enabled good networking opportunities;
■delegates were entertained; and
■we put some money back into the Society’s depleted financial coffers.
I, like my colleagues, look forward to the outcomes of the evaluation
process.
I wish my Wollongong counterparts all the best for an even more
successful event next year. Frank Bowles
