Abstract
In Southern Europe, the migrant- in- the- family model has
become a structu ral component of the elderly care regime.
However, home care work is, by it s nature, p oorly recon-
cilable with private an d family life. In f act, s everal stud-
ies have denounced the li mitations on the right to priv ate
and family life that th ese workers suffer. In this a rticle, I
use th e migrant ho me care a ssistants’ exper ience of con-
flicting temporalities around the work– life balance as lens
through which to show the social unsustainabilit y of the
Italian model of home care assistant. This pape r is bas ed
on br oader research conducted between 2018 and 2020
in Pa dua (Italy) on Moldovan female mig rant workers. As
part of this resea rch, 30 se mi- structured interviews were
collected with Moldovan workers employed – at the t ime
of the interview o r in the past – in home care for elderly
people, in a live- in or live- out regime.
