Technology originally intended to reduce staff stress levels is actually adding to the burden as harassed employees deal with an average of 191 messages a day.

Constant interruptions from phones, e-mails and faxes are putting UK workers under immense pressure. And while working from home can bring respite, it can also mean staff are sidelined.

According to communications group Pitney Bowes, the average UK worker now sends and receives 191 messages a day. "The most stressful thing about messaging is not having too much to do, but remembering to do all of those things, said Meredith Fischer, the firm's vice-president for corporate marketing. "In this respect, we are often our own worst enemies, sending ourselves messages as reminders."

As employers put more emphasis on employee health and encourage flexible working, evidence suggests that more work is needed to monitor this type of stress. In a survey by RRC Business Training, 50 per cent of personnel directors and managers in the financial service sector said staff found it difficult to juggle home and work life.
