THOMAS BERNAUER is Professor of Political Science at the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland. He directs a research
group at the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS), a joint
institution of ETH and the University of Zürich.
SHALE HOROWITZ is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His research focuses on international
and ethnic conf‌lict, the politics of international trade and f‌inance, the politics
of agricultural policy, and the politics of market reform and institutional
change in the post-communist countries and East Asia. He is co-editor of
Conf‌lict in Asia: Korea, China–Taiwan, and India–Pakistan (Greenwood,
2003) and The Political Economy of International Financial Crisis: Interest
Groups, Ideologies, and Institutions (Rowman and Littlef‌ield, 2001). He has
published articles in Communist and Post-Communist Studies, Comparative
Political Studies, Comparative Studies in Society and History, East European
Politics and Societies, Journal of Peace Research, Party Politics and other
journals.
JACQUES E.C. HYMANS is Assistant Professor of Government at Smith
College (Northampton, Massachusetts, USA). Hymans received his PhD
from the Harvard University Department of Government in November
2001. He has held residential graduate and postgraduate fellowships at the
Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris), Harvard, Ohio State and Stanford.
Hymans’ research interests include psychological and sociological
approaches to collective identity and the effects of collective identity on
foreign and security policies. His articles on these topics have appeared in
various edited volumes and journals including Estratégia, French Politics and
Society, The Nonproliferation Review and Security Studies.
MICHAEL E. SMITH is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at
Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. His research interests include
