FIREARMS ACT, 1937
THE
Firearms Act, 1937, to come into operation on the
rst
May next, and described as an Act to consolidate
the provisions of the Firearms Acts, 1920 to 1936, relating
to firearms, imitation firearms and
other
weapons, and to
ammunition, repeals the whole of the Firearms Act 1920,
the Firearms and Imitation Firearms (Criminal Use) Act
1933, the Firearms Act 1934, and the Firearms (Amend-
ment) Act 1936, with the exception of a section in the Fire-
arms Act 1920, dealing with unlawful drilling.
It
may be summarized as follows
:-
Part 1
Section
1.
No person shall purchase, acquire, or have
in his possession any firearm or ammunition without a
firearm certificate and any person doing so shall be liable to
punishment on summary conviction.
Section
2.
Firearm certificates to be issued by the chief
officer of police for the area in which the applicant resides,
under
conditions if necessary,
and
normally to continue in
force for three years. Any person aggrieved by the action of
the chief officer
under
this section may appeal to Quarter
Sessions.
It
is an offence punishable on summary conviction
to fail to surrender arevoked certificate or to make a false
statement to procure acertificate.
Section 3. A fee of
5s.
is payable on the grant of a
certificate, and
2S.
6d. on renewal,
but
no fee is payable by
approved rifle clubs or in respect of ship's equipment, air-
craft's signalling apparatus, slaughtering instruments, or
trophies of war.
Section 4. Exemptions from holding afirearm certifi-
cate granted to a registered firearms dealer, auctioneer,
carrier, or warehouseman and their servants possessing fire-
