IN this country, one murderer out of every four commits
suicide.s
In
Chicago, attention is called by the press ' to the unbe-
lievable total of 100 gang murders in little more than a year.' 8
In
each case there is a point to be
made;
and in each case
it can only be made by the use of statistics.
Many other points concerning murder can only be brought
out by that means.
From 1869 to 1928 the number of known murders in Eng-
land and Wales never fell below 100 and never rose above 200.
Even murder, therefore, is the subject of some sort of average.
During the quarter of a century from 1904 to 1928, out of
every seventy murderers convicted and sentenced to death,
fifty-five were men and fifteen were women, the actual figures
being 541 and 149, total 690.
The
'dangerous
age'
at which most murders are com-
mitted is between twenty-one and thirty, especially among
women, for it is most commonly during those years that
women kill their own children. Only 8 per cent. of the
women were over forty, against 30 per cent. of the men.
The
numbers of persons aged under sixteen convicted of
murder were very small,
but
during the quarter-century
exhibited one remarkable fluctuation.
In
the five pre-war
years, 1904-1908, no such person was convicted, and in 1908 the
