DURI NG the past few years the Standing Joint Committee
of the County of Cumberland has adopted a policy of
providing constables in rural areas with new houses specifically
planned to meet the demands of their work, and to accommo-
date their families in comfort and decency. These houses,
whilst being of such a design and finish as to harmonise with
village surroundings, serve to emphasise the standing and
responsibility of the constable, and provide a centre, obvious
to the public, for contacts with his administrative work. But
for the War, the policy would have been pursued to such a
degree that, within ashort time, few of the force would have
been occupying houses which fall short of modern standards
of hygiene, comfort, and administrative convenience.
The
Committee, on the advice of their Architect, J. H.
Haughan, Esq., A.R.I.B.A., have standardised two types of
house, known respectively as an "
A"
Type, and a " B "
Type.
The
accommodation is the same in each case, the
difference being in the position of the larder, whose aspect
decides the type for the situation.
The
plan shown here is of
the
"A"
Type house.

the larder is
situated under the stairs, the small cloakroom for uniforms
being provided elsewhere in the hall.
