Dad 'lucky to be alive' after being stabbed by thug

Now the thug who stabbed him has been jailed for more than three and a half years.

Newcastle Crown Court heard Daniel McKeith brandished a blade after a row about a party being held in a flat above in the early hours of April 3.

After remonstrating with the partygoers on South Frederick Street in South Shields, the dispute between him and two men turned violent - before McKeith pulled out a knife and stabbed a third male who had bravely run over to break up the fight.

McKeith, 37, initially denied he had used a knife and claimed he had been set upon by a group of men.

However, he pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possessing an offensive weapon when he appeared at crown court on Monday.

In a statement prepared for court, the victim said the attack had a significant and long-lasting effect upon him.

He added: "I cannot believe this has happened to me - you never think it will happen to you.

"I used to take my daughter swimming but will always be conscious of my scars.

"What will I tell my daughter? I don't want to frighten her.

"This was not my fight, I was trying to split it up and ended up nearly killed."
