Dad was stabbed to death outside home in 'first' of its kind murder case

Despite the brutality and senselessness of the crime, a top detective who led investigations into the murder said a number of key witnesses no longer wished to give vital evidence due to threats. Detective Inspector Noel Wright, who worked on the case with 70 officers, said it was believed to be the first time in Liverpool that a murder case had been halted by threats towards the witnesses.
It's now over 30 years on from Mr Scarlett's death -and his family and friends are still without justice. As part of the ECHO's unsolved crime series, we have revisited the case of Mr Scarlett to re-examine the facts and encourage anyone with information to come forward.
Rastafarian Mr Scarlett was described by those who knew him as a "keep fit fanatic" and a "bit of a jack of all trades". As a teenager he attended a special school in Otterspool where he soon became popular with both pupils and friends. When he left school in nearby Toxteth he initially wanted to become a fisherman. He later went to catering college for a while.
His major passion was his fitness, with his mum remembering as "very sports-orientated as a youngster". She added he was a particularly good cross-country runner and was a regular at a Toxteth gym. He had a four-month-old baby boy, and his mum Beatrice May Jones described him as "a loving son who would not hurt anyone".
However, Mr Scarlett died from a singular stab wound to his heart just a yard from his doorstep in broad daylight. The killing happened in a quiet south Liverpool suburb, popular then with the city's student community. He was found lying in the gutter soaked in blood.
