Abstract
Records management was identified as an emerging research theme in the last
Research Assessment Exercise return from the School of Information Studies,
University of Northumbria at Newcastle. This article examines how, since then,
the School has approached developing its research profile in records manage-
ment and highlights issues applicable to other researchers in the subject area
within the UK. The School’s medium to long term strategy for records manage-
ment research is presented.
Introduction
In the United Kingdom records management is a very recent addition,
in terms of named awards, to the subject portfolio of Higher Education
Institutions, although it has been taught as part of archives courses since
the 1950s when Peter Walne went to Liverpool to give classes in records
management. It has found a home in either archive departments or
information and library management departments. Archives depart-
ments are normally located in larger departments or schools of history,
whereas information and library management departments are located in
a range of different academic units from business to computing, or in
our own case, within a faculty of arts and design. Despite this track
record as a taught subject, it is important to note, in terms of research
recognition, that, while archives was included under either the history
panel or library and information management panel in the 1996
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE),1records management was not
mentioned at all. It is very good to see it identified explicitly, along with
archive administration, in the draft criteria for the Library and
Information Management Assessment Panel (Unit of Assessment 61) in
