Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some methods to protect digital libraries using
digital rights management (DRM) technologies and specifically the methods applied at the digital libraries of
Jordan universities.
Design/methodology/approach A descriptive research method has been used to examine the extent of
DRM in digital libraries of universities in Jordan.
Findings Majority of the universities in Jordan use different methods of protection including coding,
identification, authenticity and digital watermark. However, methods including digital signature, digital
fingerprint, copy detection systems and pay system have not been employed within Jordanian universities.
The use of copyright management systems has been limited, which shows the weakness in the use of
technological protection within the investigated libraries.
Originality/value This study has shown contribution to the development of digital libraries that are based
on the protection of new technology and are able to provide better services to users without concern about
protecting publishersrights.

Introduction
People find it difficult to retain all the information in their memory when they are provided
with excess of information. In such a situation, people ought to search for external memory
that would help them in storing and retrieving vast amount of information. Digital library is
one such method that helps to avoid such circumstances, as it includes digital collection,
procedures and services (Anwarul Islam and Ikeda, 2014). This system requires a
combination of computer and library skills. Digital libraries are those institutions that
provide necessary resources, which include specialists, who work to select, build and
display intellectual content (Foulonneau and Riley, 2014).
In Jordan, digital libraries in universities hold significant importance, as they allow
access to the full text of the document on the internet. These libraries also provide assistance
in educational programs to students, thus becoming complimentary to the educational
system. They are also associated with the distribution and interpretation of digital business.
However, they are readily available and can be easily retrieved by target communities, as
they allow exchange of opinion and render communication between specialists and students
(Rubin, 2017). Digital libraries are responsible for providing printing service to the students.
They tend to provide marketing and the presentation of scientific research on a global basis
by connecting library network with global internet.
A problem of the information being easily available for users across the globe has arisen;
despite the achievements of electronic publishing on the internet and its advantages toward
