Dixons Retail to merge with Carphone Warehouse.

Dixons Retail, one of Europe's largest specialist electrical retailers, is set to form a "merger of equals" with Carphone Warehouse in a [pounds sterling]3.7bn deal, creating a powerful presence in the UK market.

Under the arrangement, the group finance director of Dixons Retail, Humphrey Singer, will retain his job title. Its chief executive, Sebastian James, is expected to become CEO of the combined group, which is to be chaired by Sir Charles Dunstone, Carphone Warehouse's current chairman.

Singer spoke to CIMA's Excellence in Leadership (EiL) quarterly magazine in Q2 2013 about a range of topics that would prove relevant to the deal. He predicted a significant expansion for his company, which had achieved a 39 per cent year-on-year increase in profits in the UK and Ireland at the time.

"While profitability is improving substantially in the UK, it still needs to go further. That's the plan, so we're not done yet," he said.
