In a scale un seen in a century, two major earthquakes with t he epicentre of Kahra manmaraş sh ook the earth,
and with it, the entire region on 6 February 2023. On February 20, two more heavily destructive earthquakes
hit Hatay, causing fur ther loss of life and prop erty. While the impact of t he earthquake in Turkey was felt mos t in
Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, Diyarbakır, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Malatya, Osmaniye, Kilis, Elazığ and Adana;
in Northern and Ea stern Syria, a great destruc tion was experienced in the regions of Ale ppo, Idlib, Azez, Afrin and
Hama. Accordi ng to official st atements, at lea st 57,500 people los t their lives in t he earthquakes, of which 7259
were in Syria (Reli ef Web, 2023) and 50,783 in Turkey (CNN Turk, April 24, 2023). A few months later, thousands
of people are sti ll reported missing.
Like any natu ral catastroph e, this earth quake manifested e xisting social i nequalities, whil e also creating n ew
ones due t o the serious ec onomic, social an d psychological l oss experienced by millions. Before the earthquake ,
a total of 15,784,390 people were living in the earthqua ke- hit regio n in Turkey, of wh om 14,013,196 were citi-
zens and 1,73 8,035 were Syrians living under the temporary pr otection regime (P MM, 2023), making up 49% of
the ent ire Syrian refugee popu lation in Turkey. It is important t o note th at the ea rthquake- hit area has been a
multilingual, multireligious, multisectarian and multiethnic region for centuries. This diversity in the population
became more p ronounced following the di saster as some populatio ns were subjected to the uneq ual and uneven

Abstract
This commentary is based on our observations during our
fieldwork in the earthquake region in Turkey that took
place in February 6, 2023 in 11 provinces where 49% of t he
entire Syrian population in Turkey live. In this comme ntary,
we fo cus on the case of Syr ians, who have been subject
to what we c all double displacement. Syrian refugees who
were already displace d due to the war and faced with many
problems in esta blishing a new life in Turkey once again lost
their homes an d livelihoods due to the ea rthquake, expos-
ing them to increased r isks and vulnerability.
